China implemented export controls on gallium and germanium on August 1st, two rare earth metals essential for semiconductor manufacturing. The restrictions are not a complete ban—China will require a license from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce with specified information on the recipient and purpose of use for exports.

Ex: AXT, a US manufacturer of these products in China, is looking to gain permission to continue exports. China’s Rare Earth Market China holds the world’s largest reserves of rare earth elements, with many of them necessary for semiconductor production. Roughly 44M tons of rare earth oxides (REO) ”lie dormant” in Chinese soil. The US is the second largest producer of REOs with a market share of 15.5%.
